Awards, Honors & Scholarships :::
Currently, Lyons Township High School maintains and manages more than 35 scholarships in excess of $300,000. These scholarships, as well as other awards and honors, originate from within LT, from community individuals, from community organizations, and/or from community and other corporate donors.
Acceptance and Establishment
Whenever an individual or group seeks to establish an award, honor, or scholarship to help students further their education, the donor(s) must follow the Board of Education Awards, Honors, and Scholarship Policy and Procedures which are summarized below.
The Scholarship Review Committee at LTHS serves as the formal channel for the acceptance and establishment of awards, honors, and/or scholarships. Before an award, honor, or scholarship is accepted, the Scholarship Review Committee meets with the donor(s) to accept and establish the award, honor, and/or scholarship; determine criteria for student eligibility; select type of award, honor, and/or scholarship; establish monetary amount, if any; and establish management of funds. The Committee, comprised of the Superintendent (or designee), the College/Career Coordinator, a Division Chair or appropriate administrator, and community member then makes a recommendation to the superintendent and Board of Education for acceptance or rejection.
Once awards, honors, and/or scholarships are approved by the Board of Education, they are made available to students through announcements, publications, etc. The Awards, Honors and Scholarship Council then selects student recipients based upon their applications and the established criteria. The Council meets annually to select recipients and is comprised of approximately 15 LTHS faculty and administrative staff members.
Donor forms must be received by March 1st and contributions must be received by May 1st of
the academic year the contribution is to be awarded.
General Scholarship Fund
Donors who wish to make a contribution in appreciation of the school, in memory of an individual, (but not an Individual Scholarship), and/or based on their commitment to education may donate to the LTHS General Scholarship Fund. There is no minimum amount required for donations to the Fund. All contributions shall be directed toward furthering students’ post-secondary education in a two or four-year school.
All students planning to enroll in a post-secondary institution are eligible to apply for scholarships through the General Scholarship Fund by completing the LTHS Local Scholarship Common Application.
Recipients are selected by the Awards, Honors and Scholarship Selection Council. Donors who contribute to the Fund will be recognized through one or more appropriate school-sponsored forums.
Individual Scholarships
Awards, honors, and/or scholarships established in honor or memory of an individual and/or in an
individual’s name must be managed by the District. The criteria for an Individual Scholarship will
be developed and established by the Scholarship Review Committee in collaboration with the
donor(s). The recipient will be selected by the Awards, Honors and Scholarship Selection Council
based upon the established criteria. A one-time or on-going award must grant a minimum of $500 to
any one student in any one year. If the scholarship balance falls below $500, the monies shall be
incorporated in the General Scholarship Fund.
Special Awards, Honors, and Scholarships
LTHS will respect the wishes of individuals and groups who desire to give an award, honor, and/or scholarship independently of the school. The District will make appropriate efforts to publicize the availability of such scholarships and attempt to provide an appropriate forum to give public recognition to the donor(s) and student recipient(s). These awards, honors, and/or scholarships are not managed by the District in any way.
