A 1938 Lyons Township High School graduate, Reverend Daniel D. Dolan, M.M. has spent more than four decades in the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, commonly known as the Maryknoll Fathers. Prior to being ordained as a priest and serving as a pastor to the people of Tahu, Miaoli in Taiwan, he was an accountant and a Navy bombardier, navigator, and fighter pilot. In 1942, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Illinois and then entered the Navy. He was awarded the Air Medal and his unit was awarded the Presidential Citation. After the war, Dolan earned a bachelor's and a master's degree in Theology and Philosophy from Maryknoll Seminary. In 1954, he was assigned to a mission in Taiwan, where he worked to translate scriptures and religious teachings into the oral traditions of the aboriginal tribes. In 1961, he was appointed Controller General of Maryknoll, reorganizing and computerizing accounting practices at the headquarters and for missions throughout the world. Nine years later, he was assigned to help administer the retirement program for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. In 1976, at the age of 56, Rev. Dolan returned to Taiwan to resume his missionary work, preaching and teaching peace for the following 20 years. Dolan says, "Our job is to bring the message of Christ to all people. But we don't believe you can do this by just waving a Bible around. So we try to see that they have a full stomach, a sound way to make a living and proper social justice. Our idea is to build people up in body and soul and set up a living local church, one that can carry on without us." In 1996, he was assigned back to the United States to do mission promotion work, preaching in parishes and sharing the Maryknoll story of overseas mission work.
