John B. Hattendorf graduated from LTHS in 1960. He earned a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College, a master's degree in history from Brown University, and a doctorate in modern history from the University of Oxford. Since 1984, he has been the Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and since 1996, the Director of the Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. A prolific writer with more than two dozen books to his credit, he has also published numerous essays and book reviews. In 997, Kenyon College awarded him an honorary doctorate, recognizing his achievements as "one of the world's preeminent naval historians." As an officer in the U.S. Navy for eight years, he served at sea on three Atlantic and Pacific Fleet destroyers, earning a commendation for combat duty in the Vietnam War. A recognized authority in his field, he has been named editor-in-chief of the projected Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History. He has served as an officer of several national and foreign scholarly societies, and he has been a visiting professor and lecturer around the world. He is listed in The International Who’s Who in Education, The International Author’s and Writer's Who’s Who, and Contemporary Authors. Active in local community affairs, he was the founding president of the Newport Preservation Alliance, a consortium of local groups dedicated to issues of historic preservation.
