A 1944 graduate of Lyons Township High School, Dr. Mottelson became LT's first Nobel Prize winner. He received the award in 1975 for his work in physics. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University. He then went on to the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He was a Fellow at the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen from 1950-51. From 1951-53, Dr. Mottelson was the U.S. AEC Fellow with the theoretical study group in the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Copenhagen. During his professorship at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Atomic Physics in Copenhagen from 1959-80, Dr. Mottelson took a leave of absence to return to the United States as visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Since 1980, Dr. Mottelson has been a physicist for the Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. He wrote the book Nuclear Structure and numerous other publications. Dr. Mottelson resides in Copenhagen, Denmark.
