High school celebrates LT Reads!

Don’t be surprised if you see students at Lyons Township High School South Campus August 11. School will not have started by then, but the South Campus will be buzzing with students as they celebrate the district’s first summer reading program.

All incoming and returning students who read one of the books on the summer reading list are invited to attend a Summer Barbeque for Readers, Friday, August 11, at 11:30am behind the South Campus cafeterias.

Principal Dave Franson and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Scott Eggerding and others will help celebrate students’ summer reading accomplishments with lunch, prizes and games.

Initiated by the English Department, LT Reads! promotes reading as a fun, leisurely activity. Teachers compiled grade level reading lists with high interest, recent books that students may not be exposed to throughout their high school careers.

This is the first summer reading program at LTHS. The program was designed to create a culture of readers in the community.  English teacher and curriculum coordinator Anna Meyers says, “We hope parents read with/alongside their students in order to build a real atmosphere of readership. Also, reading is the place that comprehension, critical thinking, and vocabulary skills develop naturally.  Therefore, they can have a good time and develop skills simultaneously.”

Local public libraries purchased copies of the recommended books, and the LTHS South Campus library had multiple books available to check out.

To entice students to participate in LT Reads!, students who completed a post card and attained a parent signature were entered into a drawing for small prizes (slice of pizza, gift certificate, etc).

Grade level reading lists have been posted on the LTHS website at www.lths.net. Click on the LT Reads! icon.
