Stellar Mathletes take region :::

You balance your checkbook every week. You can calculate the price of an item at 30% off the original price. Well, try these slightly more complicated Math Club problems students solved at a recent math contest.

Try your hand at this precalculus question:
The three real roots of 24x3-52x2+kx-3=0 are in a geometric progression.
Find the value of k.

No luck? Okay, try this one, but no calculator allowed:
The degree measures of the angles of a triangle are in the ratio of 2:3:4. If one of the angles of this triangle is selected at random, find the probability that the degree measure of the angle selected is an integral multiple of 8. Express your answer as a common fraction reduced to lowest terms.

LT Mathletes handily answered these questions and more and are dominating competitions. They are ranked first in the North Suburban Mathematics
League and second overall in the West Suburban Conference as they enter the statewide contests.

At the fourth North Suburban Mathematics League competition, LT placed second at the geometry and senior levels and earned second place for the overall team. As they enter the conference meet, freshmen and seniors are currently ranked first in their division, sophomores are ranked second and the overall team is in first.
