WLTL earns half dozen national awards :::
Juniors J. Spataro and B. Griffin are both grand prize winners in the annual Columbia College
High School Radio Awards, sponsored by the Radio Department at Columbia College Chicago.
Both students will be recognized at the annual IBS Midwest College and High School Radio
Conference October 25. In addition, both students received scholarships to attend the Columbia
College High School Summer Institute, which offers students the chance to take college level
courses for three weeks this summer at Columbia’s downtown campus.
Griffin’s winning entry was in the category of Radio Station Promotion and was an on-air
promotion for his weekly radio show, Hype Radio, which airs Tuesdays from 5-7pm. Senior T.
McLaughlin Park was runner-up in this category for his underwriting announcement for Panchero’s
Mexican Grill.
Spataro’s winning entry came in the Radio Newscast category. One of his daily newscast from
earlier this fall earned WLTL its second consecutive top honor after K. Brossard ’08 won the grand
prize for news last year.
Aside from the three students above, senior D. Bennett received two first place prizes – one
in the Radio Public Service Campaign category for his public service announcement for Yong Inn’s
Martial Arts annual “Break-A-Thon” fundraiser for charity and a second first place prize was in the
Sports Play-By-Play category for LT Basketball vs. Hinsdale Central, a game he called on-air with
junior M. Lampariello. Junior M. Dorris also received the honor for producing the game back at the
studio.
Since the High School Radio Awards have begun at Columbia College four years ago, students
from WLTL have always taken home at least one grand-prize per year.
WLTL has also been nominated for 11 John Drury High School Radio Awards. These awards,
presented annually by North Central College in Naperville, honor and recognized the top high school
radio students and stations in the nation. Award winners will be announced at a luncheon on
Saturday, April 26. For a complete list of nominees, please visit
