Musicians win coveted competition
Playing Chicago’s Orchestra Hall is something few musicians ever get the opportunity to
do, but for 45 members of Lyons Township High School’s Orchestra, they not only took the stage they
captured a gold medal in the orchestra division at the annual National Invitational Band and
Orchestra Heritage Festival of Gold competition April 14. As the gold medal winner, LT’s orchestra
was chosen to play for the grand choral concert finale.
Several orchestras, band and choirs from around the country took part in a weekend of
rehearsals and workshops, culminating in a competition on the stage of Orchestra Hall. This marks
the first year the Heritage Festival, which draws the best high school bands and orchestras from
across the country, was held in Chicago
Last year, LT played at the Boston Symphony Hall in the Heritage Festival and earned the
fourth highest score. Three schools tied for first place honors, while LT came in second with the
fourth highest score.
